TANZANIA'S FOUNDER PRESIDENT AND FATHER OF THE NATION, MWALIMU DR. JULIUS KAMBARAGE NYERERE IS DEAD

Untold grief and mourning descended on the nation following the death of Tanzania's founder leader and first president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who passed away on 14th October 1999. Having steered the country (then Tanganyika) to independence from the British in 1961 and served as its first president, he saw his vision of a United Republic of Tanzania incorporating Tanganyika and Zanzibar come to fruition in 1964. He championed the pursuit of justice and equality devoid of race, colour, gender, religion, region, wealth and similar divisive criteria that now burden mankind. As leader-statesman, his stature and contribution has almost remained unequalled on the continent and won him the enviable title of the only individual on earth who understood Africa more than anyone else this century. He overtly committed himself to the decolonisation process for the rest of Africa, and his dream of seeing the last colony on the continent gain independence was rewarded in his lifetime. He has come to signify the nationhood, peace and unity that are the hallmark of modern Tanzania which has regrettably eluded many a country in Africa, at immense cost and untold tribulation in Africa and the world over. OBITUARY

Professor Gaspar Ndamalya Ndaalio (1935-1999)

Gaspar G. Ndaalio (Ph.D.), professor of physical chemistry, passed away on 3rd October 1999. The late professor is remembered by most of us as a dedicated academician and teacher at the University of Dar es Salaam during his tenure at the university, by then the only university (or rather constituent college of the University of East Africa), in the country. He was among a small core of local talent who helped found the chemistry department at the university, commencing his tenure in 1967. He had obtained his doctorate at the University of Toronto, and had previously studied for the Bachelors and Masters awards in Ireland. The late Ndaalio also served as Head of The Chemistry Department at UDSM as well as shouldering various university and faculty assignments such as those of Associate Dean etc. He later became Director General of The Tanzania Industrial Research development Organisation (TIRDO) after which he retired and took up contract tenure at The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) in 1995 where he worked up to the time of his death. MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD REST HIS SOUL IN ETERNAL PEACE. AMEN.
